What is marriage?
I saw J.B. Priestley’s hilarious British comedy, WHEN WE ARE MARRIED, last night. It plays at the DCPA thru December 16, 2012. There were empty seats last night, but my guess is they will be disappearing as people tell their friends about this very interesting and powerful play, fans of Downton Abby will love it! The above video shows the three couples who perform in the show, along with a couple of modern couples commenting on their marriage.
In this play Priestley takes dead aim at the institution of marriage. Those on both sides of the civil unions debate will want to attend and join in the talk backs that are scheduled, one tomorrow, Sunday, Nov 25 (see below.)
If you're not yet familiar with the plot, the three couples in the above video discover on their 25th wedding anniversary that they aren't legally married. The six spouses — all prominent citizens in a small English town — struggle to figure out how to protect their reputations and resolve their newly unmarried status.
Embodying that particular type of British humor that has drawn so many fans to loveAbsolutely Famous and Fawlty Towers, the WHEN WE ARE MARRIED cast is an all-star reunion of many DCTC company favorites. Playing the roles of the three full-blooded couples who find out they are not legally married after 25 years are: John Hutton (To Kill a Mockingbird, The House of Spirits, Plainsong, Winter’s Tale) and Jeanne Paulsen (Doubt, Mrs. Warren’s Profession, Superior Donuts, The House of the Spirits) as Mr. and Mrs. Helliwell, Sam Gregory (The 39 Steps, Noises Off, Doubt, A Flea in Her Ear,) and Leslie O’Carroll (A Christmas Carol, Reckless, Eventide) as Mr. and Mrs. Soppitt and Larry Paulsen (The 39 Steps, The Three Musketeers, Great Wall Story) and Kathleen McCall(Heartbreak House, The Taming of the Shrew, Season’s Greetings) as Mr. and Mrs. Parker. No British comedy would be complete without the stereotypical stubborn maid, Mrs. Northrop, played by longtime DCTC member; Kathleen M. Brady (Superior Donuts, The Trip to Bountiful, A Funny Thing Happened…,The Madwoman). The rest of the cast is rounded out by DCTC veterans and debut artists: Allison Pistorius (A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The House of the Spirits, A Christmas Carol) plays Nancy Holmes, Nance Williamson (Hotel on Marvin Gardens) is Lottie Grady, and Erik Sandvold (Plainsong, The Diary of Anne Frank, Well) is Rev. Clement Mercer. Debuting at DCTC are Sarah Mantonas Ruby Birtle, Benjamin Bonenfant as Gerald Forbes, Jake Walker as Fred Dyson andTom Beckett as Henry Ormonroyd.
While the women’s fabrics vary from silks, woolens and cottons that are plain, printed and embroidered, the men are mostly dressed in woolen suits. Color is carefully utilized to help clarify and define the story of each couple as the plot unfolds. Both set and costumes are complimented by the lighting design of Don Darnutzer (Fences, Heartbreak House, Dracula) and sound design by Jason Ducat (Fences, Heartbreak House, World PremiereTwo Things You Don’t Talk About At Dinner). Dramaturgy is by Douglas Langworthy (The Three Musketeers, Heartbreak House, World Premiere Great Wall Story) and voice and dialect coach Kathryn G. Maes Ph.D completes the setting by ensuring only the purest form of the charming Yorkshire accent is used.

Berlin’s WHITE CHRISTMAS in The Buell Theatre November 23 – December 24,

With a lyrical score by Irving
Berlin that includes unforgettable classic songs such as “Happy Holiday,”
“Sisters,” “Blue Skies,” “I Love a Piano,” and the popular title number “White
Christmas,” this stage adaptation of the beloved Paramount Pictures film musical
with Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye delivers gorgeous songs with a touch of
nostalgia. Two World War II vets are determined to rescue their beloved
commanding officer whose country inn is imperiled by lack of snow. With the help
of their girlfriends (a pair of singing sisters) they hatch an ingenious plan to
save Christmas.
Playing the role of Bob and Phil
are DCTC debuting actors Tom Galantich and Nicolas Dromard,
respectively. Galantich has appeared in such shows as Don’t Dress for
Dinner, Boeing, Boeing, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and Mama
Mia. Dromard has been seen on Broadway in Mary Poppins, The Boy
From Oz, Oklahoma and Hairspray.
Returning to assume the roles of
the singing sisters Betty and Judy are Amy Bodnar and Kate
Marilley, respectively. Bodnar has been seen in Broadway productions of
Oklahoma and Ragtime as well as Off-Broadway in Sessions at
Playwrights Horizons and The Realm at The Wild Project. Marilley has
appeared as Peggy Sawyer in 42nd Street, Ivy Smith in On
The Town and Sheila in A Chorus Line.
Producing Artistic Director
Kent Thompson (The Taming of the Shrew, The Liar, A
Midsummer’s Night Dream, Othello) directs this holiday favorite with
choreography by Patti Colombo (Irving Berlin’s White Christmas)
and musical direction by Gregg Coffin (A Funny Thing…Forum, A
Christmas Carol). Anna Louizos creates a set full of warmth, festive
cheer and snow (!) that will make feel like you’re home for the holidays.
Costume design is by David Kay Mickelsen (When We Are Married,
Fences, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer), based on original designs
by Carrie Robbins. Over 200 costumes are used in the production and stay true to
the post WWII period while capturing the essence of the season. You can’t tis
the season without lighting which is designed for this production by Tom
Sturge (The Taming of the Shrew, Irving Berlin’s White
Christmas) and sound designed by Craig Breitenbach (The Three
Musketeers, Ring of Fire: The Music of Johnny Cash, A Christmas
Carol).

17 Points Lift Denver to 68-51 Win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi

Udofia leads Pioneers with a game-high 17 points and seven rebounds
University of Denver men’s basketball team
junior forward Chris Udofia (Irving, Texas) had game highs with 17
points and seven rebounds, leading the Pioneers to a 68-51 win over Texas
A&M-Corpus Christi on Wednesday night at Magness Arena.
Denver (1-1) shot 44.4 percent (11-for-21) from three-point
range in the game, including three from sophomore guard Brett Olson
(Highlands Ranch, Colo.), who finished with 11 points. Overall, the Pioneers
hit 46.5 percent (20-of-23) from the field, while holding the Islanders (1-1)
to 38.8 percent (19-of-49).
“Our defensive effort was much better tonight than it was in
our opener,” head coach Joe Scott. “We also got a big contribution from
our fifth through eighth players, which is another thing that we have
emphasized. These are things we have to keep getting better at game by game.”
Denver will return to action Friday when they host
California of the Pac-12. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. MT, and the game will be
broadcast live on ROOT SPORTS.

With romance in mind, two WWII vets follow a pair of songbird sisters to a Vermont inn, which is coincidentally owned by their beloved commanding officer. When lack of snow threatens to shut the doors for good, the couples stage a show to keep the hearth fires burning. Filled with 17 Broadway-size production numbers including “Blue Skies,” “I Love a Piano” and the most-recorded tune in history —“White Christmas” — this heartwarming musical is a lavish holiday spectacle.
