PLAYS THE RICKETSON THEATRE SEPTEMBER 28 – NOVEMBER 18

Lowis Lowry’s powerful award-winning novel, THE GIVER, comes to life in a thought provoking production by the Denver Center Theatre Company (DCTC).

A standard reading throughout middle schools in the United States, this modern-day fable will transport you to a new world, stir the imagination, and have you questioning the value of“choice”.

In a futuristic world devoid of color, emotion and differences, 12-year-old Jonas is selected to be the sole keeper of his world’s memories. But as his newfound knowledge opens up a new world of pain, loss, family and love, will he dare to escape the rules that govern his society or will he choose to grasp the vibrant colors that have awakened his curiosity?

Single tickets for THE GIVER, on sale now, start at $27 (non-SCFD) and also are available for $10 (SCFD 10 for $10 program) and are on sale now.  To purchase, call Denver Center Ticket Services at 303.893.4100.  For groups of 10 or more, please call 303.446.4829.  TTY (for Deaf and hard-of-hearing patrons): 303.893.9582.  Tickets also may be purchased at the Denver Center Ticket Office, located in the Helen Bonfils Theatre Complex lobby.  Buy and print online at www.denvercenter.org.  Student rush $10 tickets are available one hour prior to curtain with a valid student ID subject to availability.  Senior and military rush tickets are available one hour prior to curtain, subject to availability. "That's what I've been telling you about!" was the final line, the lights of heaven went dark, and The Space Theatre was suddenly filled with the applause of a long, loud, enthusiastic standing ovation last night that brought big smiles, thank yous, and then the cast in return giving their applause for the enthusiastic audience.

Wow. Don't miss seeing this wonderful prouction of FENCES. (For details see my previous post below.)

The Broadway production in 1983 starred James Earl Jones as Troy (the part played a couple of years ago in the Broadway revival by Denzel Washington.)

It's hard to imagine any production more powerful than the one we saw here in Denver last night. The entire cast seemed perfect for each role (with the one exception of Raynell who seemed a few years too old, but still gave an outstanding performance) and each and every actor played their part to perfection.

This is the story of the American dream that too often becomes a nightmare, the story that so often is shirt sleeves to shirt sleeves in three generations.

FENCES is the first of that story in a 10-play cycle, all written by renounded playwrite August Wilson. In 2009, 4 years after his death, we saw his 10th and final play here in Denver, Radio Golf (click here for more), this is a great opportunity to see the headwaters, this powerful play that is the kick off of the 10 plays that each, and all, are one of the greatest of all American stories.

Tickets are still available, but don't expect them to last long. Get yours using the links in my previous post here.

PLAYS THE SPACE THEATRE SEPTEMBER 14 – OCTOBER 14

Troy Maxson, a star baseball player whose career was blunted by the racism prevalent in pre-Jackie Robinson America, now supports his family as a sanitation worker. Feeling his world rapidly changing, Troy builds a fence to protect what is familiar and hold off what threatens. Both muscular and lyrical, this August Wilson blockbuster, winner of the Pulitzer Prize and two Tony Awards, shows what can happen when a strong man is robbed of his dreams.
